The Mistral class represents an ambitious, new development for the French navy. Built quickly in a modular design and manufacturing environment, the Mistral class will provide the French with much improved over-the-horizon amphibious assault capability similar to that possed by the United States with its Tarawa Class (which it vaguely resembles), and the UK with its Ocean Class.

The lead ship, the Mistral, was laid down in October of 2003, launched in October of 2004, and was commissioned in late 2005. The seconmd ship, the Tonnerre, was launched in 2004 and will be commissioned in late 2006.

Four ships are planned.
