Several improved versions have been produced since, which include the Type 053H1 Jianghu-II, a single Type 053H1 Jianghu-IV which added a helicopter hanger , and the newest, the six Type 053H1G Jianghu-V vessels. Thirty-two of these ships were built between 1976 and 1995, and 28 still serve with the PLAN. Despite being regarded as obsolete by most analysts by today’s standards, these frigates remains in operational service for fire support, coastal patrol, and other duties and are still a credible force in numbers when operating in conjunction with other more modern surface combatants. Generally, the vessels are armed with six surface to surface missiles, one or two dual 100mm dual purpose naval guns, four 37mm guns, and anti-submarine rocketry. They displace nearly 2,000 tons and running on their two diesel engines are capable of 26 knots. Althopugh they have no missile air defence, with their numbers and with moderate anti-surface and anti-submarine warfare capabilities, these vessels continue to provide experience and capability for the PLAN that cannot be ignored, particularly in cross-strait considerations. |
