Georgian homes and villages are being burned and razed and Georgian civilians are being forced to leave...many with nothing but what they can wear and carry, if that. ![]() ![]() Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili announced that Georgia was officially breaking diplomatic ties with Russia, ordering its diplomats and staff to leave Moscow and return to Georgia. The action comes as a direct Georgian response to Moscows recognition of its two Provinces as independent, violating agreements that Russia itself had signed recognizing those areas as a part of the soveriegn borders of Georgia, and to the continued presence of Russian troops in some areas of Georgia outside of the agreed upon zones in the cease fire agrement.. Consulates in both countries will remain open at this time. ![]() ![]() Russian Prime Minister, Vladmir Putin and the Kremlin moved swiftly to tighten its grip on Georgia’s breakaway provinces, announcing that South Ossetia would soon become part of Russia, which will open military bases in the province under an agreement to be signed on Tuesday with Russia. The move exposed Russia's intent to annex land regarded internationally as part of Georgia from the start. Moscow also indicated plans to establish two bases in Abkhazia. Sergei Shamba, Abkhazia’s Foreign Minister, said that a similar agreement on military co-operation would be signed within the month with Russia. The Kremlin confirmed that agreements on “peace, co-operation and mutual assistance with Abkhazia and South Ossetia” were being put in place and that it would represent the interests of the two provinces abroad. |
