They have reduced radar signature hulls, carry a mediun ASW helicopter, carry eight anti-surface missiles, but are very weak on air defense. That was corrected in the Type 054A class Frigates which have been built in large numbers in series production and are decribed below. Ship List: (Date launched and shipyard)

Crew: 250 est. Helicopter(s): 1 KA-27 ASW Sensors: - Fregat-MAE-5 (Top Plate) 3D radar, 120km aircraft, 50km sea-skimming - MR90 (Front Dome) F-band radars for air defence missiles - Mineral-ME (Band Stand) radar, ASM missile control & OTH targeting - Type 347G I-band radars, two for Type 730 CIWS & 1 or 76mm gun - TR47C fire-control radar integrated in Type 730 CIWS - MR36 (Type 346) surface search radar - Type MGK-335 fixed sonar, Bull Horn active & Whale Tongue passive Armament: - 1 x 32 VLS 9M38/HQ-16 MR AAM - 8 x YJ-83 SSM - 1 x 76mm DP Gun - 2 x Type 730 30mm CIWS, 5800 rpm, 3000 m - 6 x 533mm torpedoes - 2 x Type 87 240mm, 6 tube anti-sub rocket launchers. 36 rockets 1,200m Beginning in 2006, the PLAN began to produce a newer, upgraded version of the Type 054 FFG, the Type 054A, or Jiangkai II. This vessel has slight modifications to the hull, but principally increased the anti-air defense of the vessel significantly by adding a 32 cell vertical launch system (VLS) to the fore deck of the ship, employing 32 medium range (HQ16) anti-air missiles and the sensors to guide and direct them. Since that time, the PLAN has been in serial production of these vessels for seven years now, building 2-3 per year. Seventeen have been launched, two are under construction, and another has been ordered for a total of twenty thuis far. These are very capable multi-purpose/role frigates that will provide strong escort capabilities to the PLANs capital vessels like the Type 071 LPD Class and particularly their new PLAN aircraft carrier. Ship List by Pennant Number (Launch Date and Shipyard)
FFG 529 Zhoushan,2006-1221, HP Note: Of these twenty vessels, seventeen have been launched (one of which is still outfitting), two are under construction (one each in the two shipyards), and one is on order (May 2013). There remains a storng likelihood that the PLAN will produce a follow-on, improved version called the Type 054B. Some believe the last two units of these twenty will represent this new design, others believe it will start after the twenty units. To date, this is indeterminate as no new features have appeared on the vessels under construction, and no new features are evident in any pieces at the yards awaiting construction. |
